There are many stories about selkies in all cultures where seals are found. I heard my first when I was 14 years old, from "The Orchard Book of British Folk Tales", written by Kevin Crossley-Holland, and was captivated.. In most legends of selkies the creature is a seal in the sea and a woman on land, and if a man can capture the skin of a selkie she will make the perfect wife, and so long as. Over time I have gathered many selkie stories, drawn to the seal spirit as a moth is drawn to candlelight. Perhaps my favorite of all of these is The Brides of Rollrock Island by Margo Lanagan. Her book smells of the salt sea and moves with the sway of the water. Her character Miskaella has the power to draw the selkie out from the seal.

According to Celtic legend, a selkie is a seal underwater and a woman on land. Sometimes she emerges from the ocean, shedding her white selkie-coat to dance on the sand in moonlight. In the liminal space of the shore, she is vulnerable to capture by a man, and she may become a man’s wife . The Selkie Bride A Scottish Folktale. Long ago, on a wild Scottish coast, a fisherman spent all day at sea, but he caught only a few very small fish. As the sun began to set, the fisherman still had only a meager catch, but when night fell, he rowed to shore and beached his little boat.

Todd Gallicano is the author of Guardians of the Gryphon's Claw and The Selkie of San Francisco, the first two books in the Sam London Adventures series. When he's not hammering out the next Sam London novel on his Royal Deluxe typewriter, he lives with his wife and daughter. Visit him at to learn more top-secret. Steady writing and rich backgrounds give a touch of class to this routine horror/sex hocus-pocus&#;all about a mutant species living in caves on the Scottish coast. The hero is US tidal-flow expert Don Willis, an alcoholic who goes to inspect the coastal cave waters off Laxford (for which a nuclear reactor is secretly planned)&#;and is soon joined by wife Mary, a Scots-descended, .
